Ed. Grithnir m.

Ed. Grithnir m.

A servant from the house of Hador who accompanied Túrin to Doriath, along with Gethron (UT/71).

Conceptual Development: In the earliest Lost Tales, this character was first named (Gnomish?) Gumlin, revised to Mailrond in the Lays of Beleriand from the 1920s (LB/119). The character was renamed (Noldorin?) Grithron in Silmarillion drafts from the 1930s (LR/151), and again to Grithnir in Tolkien’s final versions of Túrin’s tale. The meaning and language of all these names is unclear.

G. Gumlin m.

In the earliest Lost Tales, the name of the servant who accompanied Túrin to Doriath, renamed Grithnir in later writings. Elsewhere in later writings, the name Gumlin was briefly used for the father of Húrin before Tolkien changed this name to its final form, Galdor.

See Ed. Grithnir for further discussion.
