Ed. Hundar m.

Ed. Hundar m.

Brother of Haldir, as indicated in a late genealogy chart of the House of Haleth (WJ/237).

Conceptual Development: N. Hundor was the son of (male) Haleth the Hunter and father of Haldir in Silmarillion drafts from the 1930s (SM/297, LR/275). In The Etymologies, the name Hûndor was given as a combination of hûn “heart” and the suffix -dor “lord” (Ety/KHŌ-N, EtyAC/KHŌ-N).

The character Hundor continued to appear in Silmarillion revisions from the 1950s-60s (WJ/49), but when the character of Haleth became a lady, the genealogy of this house was rearranged so that Halmir became the father of Haldir, and the similarly named Hundar became instead his brother (WJ/237).
