Q. amillë n. “mother”
This word is sometimes reduced to amil, especially in compounds, as is often the case with words ending in -llë.
In later writing, Tolkien may have altered this to emil(lë) < *EM, perhaps to distinguish it from AM² “up”. As evidence of this, the related hypocoristic (pet names) ammë and amya “mummy” appeared in later writings as emmë and emya, the second one derived from emilinya “my mother”. This lexicon uses amillë because it is better attested.
