Q. Anaxartaron Onyalië pn. “Of the Ents and the Eagles”

Q. Anaxartaron Onyalië, pn. “Of the Ents and the Eagles”
The title of an essay written by Tolkien, glossed “Of the Ents and the Eagles”, earlier labeled Anaxartamel without translation (WJ/340). This name is very difficult to analyze. There is some consensus that Onyalië might mean “Ent-people”, and that Anaxartaron looks like the genitive plural of a word *Anaxarta (“?Eagle”), but this is all guesswork. For further discussion see the following article by Patrick Wynne, which also provides links to discussions on this topic on the Elvish language mailing lists.
