— J.R.R. Tolkien, (editor) Christopher Tolkien; 1994
The eleventh book in the History of Middle Earth series. It discusses the development of the second half of The Silmarillion and some other writing from the same period. Of particular interested is the lengthy “Quendi and Eldar” essay from 1959-60 discussing the origin of the names Elves used for themselves, with extensive linguistic notes on this and other topics. References are by page number; the first 2 digits of the decimal value are the line number, and the last 2 digits are the word position in the line.
