An adjective appearing susc “hushed, quiet; abashed” in the Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s, with a variant form cusc and a related noun suss “hush, sudden quiet” (GL/68). These may all be related to later ᴹ√SLUS “whisper” from The Etymologies of the 1930s.
