As pointed out by Christopher Gilson, it was likely a later iteration of the “root” ᴹ√STINTĀ (actually a primitive word) from The Etymologies of the 1930s with gloss “short” and derivatives like ᴹQ. sinta/N. thent “short” (Ety/STINTĀ).
